Tribal families were engaged as landless labour, daily wage workers, etc, which led to economic hardships and debt at usurious interest rates. SNSF’s SHG (Self-Help Group) was created to generate income from livestock.

Members were trained in rearing goats, goat feed production, record keeping and monthly meetings. The SHG secured a Rs. 40,000 loan from the Bank of Maharashtra (Karanjali branch). Following initial success, SHG members mobilised another loan of Rs. 2.5 lakhs coupled with a Rs. 1.25 lakhs subsidy from the Government. The result: members generated around Rs. 7000 in monthly income plus daily milk for their families. Goat waste was used on farms, loans were repaid. The business has helped broad-base incomes beyond a complete dependence on agriculture.
