As a part of Group’s endeavour to create a successful pipeline of leaders to move to top management positions please join me in wishing Deepak Chopra success in the new role as Chief Executive Officer Designate, Deepak will assume this role after a successful completion of Chandrakant Patel session as CEO of Anand Automotive Systems in October 2009.
Mr Deep C Anand
Mr Deep C Anand

During his tenure, Chandrakant Patel has contributed remarkably towards the overall growth of the organisation with his innovative ideas and out of the box thinking capability. During his 38 years with the Group in various assignments, he contributed a great deal towards the overall growth of the organisation by bringing quantum improvement in quality and through “breakthrough Management”.

Mr Patel started his career with Anand Automotive Systems as General Manager of Purolator India Ltd, moved to Corporate Office responsible for Human Resource, Business Development and Strategy. In 1997 he was appointed as Managing Director Spicer India Limited. He was appointed, Chief Operating Officer of Anand Group in 1999 and CEO in 2003. Some of the most influencing concepts brought in by him were APS - to increase the value contribution and customer satisfaction, Six Sigma – a powerful problem solving approach, QCDGP – an approach to meet the customers needs on the quality, cost and delivery and Linchpin Positions – to create leadership pipeline and provide a clear defined development path for talented young professionals. Considering all his contribution to the Group and his capability to contribute further to the organistation, he will become a member of the Anand Supervisory Board, the highest policy making body in Anand Automotive Systems.

Deepak Chopra the CEO Designate of Anand Automotive Systems is suitably qualified to take over the responsibility from Chandrakant Patel in October 2009. He is a ‘home grown’ manager who brings 32 years of relevant experience in several important positions and high level of business acumen.

Deepak joined the organisation in 1976 as a Management Trainee at Parwanoo and has held various positions of growing responsibilities. The important assignments held by him over the years include Financial Controller of Purolator India Ltd., Financial Controller of Gabriel India Ltd., COO of Purolator India Ltd., (now MAHLE Filter Systems India Ltd.) COO of Mando India Ltd., COO of Arvin Exhaust India Pvt. Ltd. (now Emcon Technologies India Pvt. Ltd.) and MD and CFO of Anand Automotive Systems Ltd. Presently he is also the Chairman of the Boards and is overseeing operations of Degremont. Henkel Teroson India, Camfil Farr air Filteration India, and Chang Yun India.

My expectations from Deepak as new CEO Designate are higher and I am convinced that he has the capability and capacity to manage the business through many challenges facing us today. His challenge in the course of his journey as CEO starts with holding Anand Automotive Systems high in spite of the global recession that has affected the automotive sector tremendously.

I expected Deepak to successfully align our vision, to move Anand Automotive Systems from being a 'leader in automotive components' to becoming 'the preferred partner in automotive systems'. In his endeavor he will be faced with the challenges and opportunities to manage the 18 Group companies - though independent legal entities but as ‘One Corporate Entity, irrespective of the shareholdings.’

As a Group CEO Designate, Deepak is expected to successfully manage our companies and businesses by achieving a turnover of US$ 1 billion by 2012. He will have the support of the board members, advisors and you all to make it happen.

Concept of Operating Engineers

The concept of employing Operating Engineers (OEs) at Anand, first emerged in 1992. In view of the changing and competitive business environment which demanded world-class quality products, the Group realised the need for a 'knowledge workforce'.

Knowledge workers have the ability to learn and grasp things faster and apply the same at their workplace. This facilitates self-managed, team-based working as the knowledge worker also has a better attitude towards quality work by virtue of his/her education and training.

Thus, having knowledge workers instead of the traditional blue-collar workforce was not only futuristic but also inevitable in the prevailing business scenario.

On an experimental basis, Operating Engineers were first inducted at Gabriel India's Ambad plant. The results were encouraging and accordingly, a decision was taken to employ these youngsters to run machines in all plants. Today, the Group has 2800 Operating Engineers, out of which 27 % are women. They are Diploma holders in Engineering and those who show faster development move into the staff cadre and are positioned in different functions such as technical field support, marketing, material, Supply Chain, Quality, Engineering etc.

Women Empowerment

Anand has set itself a target of 30% women employees. Currently the figure stands at 14% but some of the more recently established companies and facilities of the Group, have close to 30% women.

What sets Anand apart? The policy is fair. Anand has no reservations in hiring women in any function but is equally demanding of women as it is of men. Irrespective of gender, Anand demands hard work, the drive to move ahead and a solid work ethos that encourages women to foray into an industry which is still considered, the main preserve of men.

Furthermore, the Group's Chairman, Mr Deep C Anand, is an ardent proponent of equal opportunity employment. He is a firm believer that both men and women are equally capable in assisting the growth of an enterprise. This belief has taken strong roots and induction of women has become an integral part of the culture at Anand. Today, there are women Engineers, Chartered Accountants, Corporate Communicators, Information Technologists, HR Managers, Marketing Professionals and Operating Engineers, with several of them even heading functions.

To ensure that women staying away from their families do not face problems of accommodation, health and personal aid, Anand has provided hostel, transport and medical facilities, especially for Operating Engineers. If required, counseling is also made available through its caring welfare arm - SNS-Foundation - which provides the support system needed for women at all times.
